El panorama general

The protests began after the sentencing of Vickrum Digwa, 23, to life in prison with a minimum of 21 years. Digwa stabbed 18‑year‑old Nowak with a ceremonial Sikh dagger in December. He then falsely told police he had been the victim of a racist attack.

Body‑camera footage released after the trial shows police handcuffing Nowak moments before he lost consciousness and died. While handcuffed, Nowak said he could not breathe, but officers initially treated him as a suspect.

Nowak’s family asked the public not to use the case "to cause disturbances." Despite that, hundreds gathered on Tuesday outside a police station. The demonstration turned violent when some attendees threw chairs, cans, rocks and pyrotechnics at officers. Eleven police officers and a police dog were injured.

Digwa’s false claim of being a victim of racial assault – and the police’s initial response of handcuffing Nowak – gave far‑right activists a ready‑made narrative of institutional bias against white people. The fact that Nowak was handcuffed while dying, even if unintentional, fuels mistrust. But the actual evidence shows Digwa, a Sikh man, falsely accused the white victim of racism. That nuance is often lost in public debate.

The 11 charged individuals will appear in court over the coming days. Police have not ruled out further arrests. The political fallout continues, with Starmer’s government under pressure to address both the violence and the underlying questions about police conduct in the original incident.
